Gas central heating energy cost-efficiency advice
Gas central heating energy cost-efficiency advice
It is generally accepted that we should cut our energy use to be kind to the planet. Gas charges seem to be perpetually on the rise and it is therefore also helpful to make better use of the gas you buy. The typical UK family spends close to half of it’s energy costs on central heating gas use. Every household should be able to trim its heating costs by following out some of the tips we have outlined below.
Look At where you are using gas heating systems :
You can easily turn off heating boiler radiators for a period, so switch them off in any rooms that are not going to be used for a while such as a spare bedchamber. If an area of your home is not used often it really doesn’t need heating. Seal the room off by closing the door and you will have effectively shrunk your home and reduced your heating charges.
turn off a fire if you are using the boiler :
If the gas boiler is on using it to heat one additional room consumes only a little extra gas. With coal or wood fires most of the heat disappears up the flue, modern central heating systems are much more efficient in heating your home than using an electric fire.
Eliminate draughts with insulation
Stop being chilly air flowing into your home means that you do not have to pay for energy to continually heat the air. Doors are often areas where chilly air leaks in so use approved entrance door insulation. There can be cracks between the window and entrance door frames and a wall which are easily sealed with a foam based sealer. These type of cracks happen often in elderly homes as the foundations settle. Whilst draughts are unseen using a wax candle flame can help to reveal where they are.
Ensure you are wearing warm clothing indoors :
If you are cold in the room put on some more clothes before you move to rise the thermostatic temperature. Surprisingly, a 1° reduction in the room thermostat can result in a ten% decrease in your gas use.
Use the drapes effectively :
During the day if the sun is shining keep the drapes on the sunny side of the house open to heat the inside of your home. Your windowpanes can be the cause of a lot of heat loss at nighttime as external temperatures drop. This heat loss can be cut if you close the curtains, saving a small amount each daylight amounts to a large saving on your heating costs over time. Thin curtains are not as effective as thick ones at preventing this heat loss.
General tips for the rest of the home :
Some heating boiler systems have a hot water cylinder and this must be insulated. Do not pay to heat water and then allow it cool down throughout the day.
Putting silver foil behind radiators could save a large sum each year.
