Get a lower gas account

The news papers are full of reasons why we should trim gas consumption. Gas bills seem to be forever on the rise and it is therefore also helpful to make best use of the gas you buy. Whilst you use electricity and gas throughout your household you may find that up to one 50% of your gas bill relates to your gas central heating energy use. Every family should be able to reduce its heating bills by carrying through some of the advice we have outlined below.

Check where you are using the gas boiler :
You can easily turn off heating boiler radiators for a period, so switch them off in any rooms that are not going to be used for a while such as a spare bedroom. If an area of your home is not used frequently it really doesn’t need heating. Seal the room off by shutting the entrance door and you will have in effect contracted your home and reduced your heating costs.

Use the gas boiler to heat your home rather than other appliances :
If the room needs to be warmer use thermostatically manipulated radiator valves and rise the temperature setting. A lot of the heat generated by a fire goes up in the chimney to the outside, the gas central heating is much more efficient for heating than an electric fire.

Cut down on drafts by use insulation
Stop being chilly air flowing into your home means that you do not have to pay for energy to continually heat the air. Doors are often areas where cold air leaks in so use approved door insulation. You can get foam sealers which will rapidly close any air gaps that have developed between your door or window frames and the wall. These type of gaps happen often in aging houses as the foundations settle. The flame from a wax candle can help you to see invisible drafts as it flutters when they are present.

A jumper or blanket might mean you don’t need to turn up the heating :
When you sense the room is a little chilly look at putting on some additional clothing in preference to turning up the room thermostat. You can save up to 10% on your heating bills just by cutting the thermostat by 1°.

Make good use of your curtains :
During the daylight if the sun is shining keep the curtains on the sunny side of the house open to heat the interior of your home. Outside temperatures drop at night time and your home can lose a lot of heat through the windowpanes. This heat loss can be reduced if you close the drapes, if you take this approach over several months you can save large sums on your heating bills. The heavier your drapes the better for providing this supplementary layer of insulation.
