Slash your homes future energy charge

Slash your homes future energy charge

The news papers are full of reasons why we should cut gas consumption. Gas costs seem to be constantly on the rise and it is therefore also helpful to make best use of the gas you buy. The typical UK household spends around 50% of it’s gas costs on gas heating system gas use. Every house should be able to cut its heating expenses by carrying out some of the tips we have outlined below.

Check where you are using the gas boiler :
If you have a spare sleeping room that is not being used turn off the central heating metal radiator in the room. There are no setbacks in not heating rooms which are not used, but there is an advantage in reducing the energy costs to heat your home. Seal the room off by shutting the entrance door and you will have in effect shrunk your home and contracted your heating expenses.

Prefer the boiler in preference to using a fire :
The fire is not as efficient as the heating boiler and it will not heat the rest of your home. If you think about it the design of a fire incorporates a chimney which allows heat to escape to the outside, a central heating system is more efficient than an electric fire.

Eliminate draughts with insulation
gas is wasted in homes due to poor insulation and draughts bringing chilly air into the home. Doors are often regions where cold air leaks in so use approved entrance door insulation. There can be cracks between the window and door frames and a wall which are easily filled with a foam based sealant. If you live in an aging home you might be astonished how often these gaps occur. The flame from a wax candle can help you to see invisible drafts as it flutters when they are present.

Put on a sweater and warmer clothing :
If you are going to turn up the heating thermostat stop and consider whether it could be best to put on some additional clothing. You may not know it but a small 1° decrease in the room temperature can save a large ten% on your heating use.

Temperature can be manipulated by using your curtains :
In the wintertime make sure that the curtains are open when the sun is shining to heat your home. Your windowpanes can be the cause of a lot of heat loss at nighttime as outside temperatures diminish. Closing the curtains provides an insulating layer which helps stop this, this approach will help to save you a lot of money over many months. The thicker your curtains the best for providing this incremental layer of insulation.

General advice for the rest of the home :
Check your heating boiler system and whether it has a hot water cylinder as this should be insulated. The hot water tank will hold hot water you have paid for and it is lunacy to allow this to cool down unused throughout the day.

Radiators warm the wall at the rear of and this heat loss can be diminished if you put aluminium foil at the rear of the radiators.
